New Interactions

New Interactions is a series of browser experiments using the new'ish OpenType variable font specification. These were built with the intention of exploring the newfound Wild West of web text. All demos use Jost by Indestructible Type, which contains two axes: weight and italic.

Bug Report

I originally used a 10×10 grid for the second demo. I noticed that it ran just fine on my phone, but ate up memory on my relatively powerful desktop. Certainly strange. I dug around Stackoverflow for a while and came back with nothing, so I used a 4×4 grid instead. This worked fine on all mobile and desktop browsers. However, many users—even those with machines more capable than mine—complained of poor performance and excessive memory usage. This project eventually caught the attention of the Mozilla developer community as it uncovered a critical bug in Web Render.
